Los pasatiempos

Games and Fun Stuff

2 Games for Pasatiempos (Connect 4 & Battleship): Here are two games that help students practice using pasatiempos vocabulary. There is a short warm-up and vocabulary list. The main activities include:

Conectar 4: Conectar 4, or Connect 4, has students practice conjugating regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs in the simple present.

Battleship: Battleship, or Barquitos, has students practice using the verbs odiar, me gusta, and me encanta with the regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.

Verb Study: Verb Study has students practice using the verbs in both simple present and with the odiar, me gusta, and me encanta expressions. This can be done as a final activity in class or as a homework assignment.

Everything's in Word, so you can edit as necessary. Great for Spanish 1!

Juego de Puntos - Game to Practice Future Tense With -IR: Here is a game where students practice the use of the future tense with -ir. Students work with a partner or in small groups. They complete tasks based on the cards for the game scattered around the room. The groups earn a certain amount of points, depending on the types of questions they answer. Blue cards have basic tasks, like conjugating the verb ir, or filling in the blanks for sentences using the future tense with -ir. Green cards have different prompts that ask students to create sentences with the future tense with -ir. White cards have the most challenging prompts, as the ask students to read a text and create a timeline or a map of what they read. (You will need to copy the cards onto appropriately colored paper and cut them, so there is some prep involved.) After 30 minutes or so, the pairs or small groups add up the points of another pair or small group. Whoever has the most points, wins!

In my experience, students love the game. Honestly, I don't even have a good name for this game (I've called it the Points Game, or Juego de puntos), but I don't think it matters. What does matter is that students get the chance to practice the future tense with -ir and have fun at the same time. I've used this game with the theme of Viajes, but I think you could use it with other themes that use the future tense with -ir. Everything's in Word so you can edit it as necessary. Great for Spanish 1!

Juego de Puntos: Present Progressive Spanish: Here is a game where students practice the use of the present progressive Students work with a partner or in small groups. They complete tasks based on the cards for the game scattered around the room. The groups earn a certain amount of points, depending on the types of questions they answer. Blue cards have basic tasks, like conjugating verbs or filling in the blanks for sentences using the the present progressive. Green cards have different prompts that ask students to create sentences with the present progressive. White cards have the most challenging prompts, as the ask students to read a text and create a timeline or a map of what they read. 2 Games for the Theme of Deportes and Pasatiempos Spanish: Product Description

Here are two games (plus a warm-up and extra task) that focus on vocabulary for a deportes theme or pasatiempos theme. Specifically, you get:

A Warm Up: This is just a quick matching activity that helps students predict the vocabulary they will learn for the day

Game 1: Escaleras y serpientes, or Chutes and Ladders, game. In this game, students play the game in small groups to review and use sports vocabulary. The words are in English, and students will identify the Spanish equivalent words. Students will need dice and game pieces to move around the board.

Game 2: Barquitos, or Battleship, game. In this game, students will place specific kinds of battle ships around their game board. Across the top are useful expressions in talking about sports, such as Para jugar el deporte, necesitamos and Para jugar el fútbol, necesitamos. On the far left side are items needed for playing various sports. In order to identify a square, students will state the useful expression and the sports item that is related to that square. If they guess where a boat is using this process, they sink a battleship! Whoever sinks the most boats wins.

Extra Activity: This is an extra activity to serve as an exit ticket or homework assignment. In this task, students write sentences about what they need to play the sport and make a drawing of each.

Listening

Interpretive Listening: Peppa Pig Va a la Playa Pasatiempos Presente Progresivo: Here's an interpretive listening activity based on the video Peppa Pig Va a la Playa (found on the YouTube site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qetyRTRuqY. The main activity is DIFFERENTIATED based on different levels of difficulty. There's also a warm-up and labeling activity where students identify the activity based on pictures. The grammar reinforced is the present progressive, but if you want to change it to simple present, or even simple past, I imagine you could change the instructions to have students complete the same activities in the verb tense of your choice.

This document is heavy on images, which I cannot put on Teachers Pay Teachers because I did not create them. However, in order to use the images, simply visit my site https://gramatichica.wixsite.com/laprofesoragil/los-pasatiempos and scroll down to the images in the listening section. They are FREE to download. (Even if you don't purchase this activity, you are welcome to the images and videos on my site. They are all free!)

Stations Activities

There is a warm-up, a stations activity, and a post activity where students draw a school scene and describe the activities in the students in the picture in the same way the evaluated the other pictures at each station. Students will move from station to station, which is great for kids who don't like sitting the entire class time. Students will also work in pairs, which will give the chance to help each other negotiate correct answers. In order to avoid copyright infringement I've taken out the images, but they are available for free at my website http://gramatichica.wixsite.com/laprofesoragil/los-pasatiempos. The best part is that you can edit the activity to tailor them to the needs of your students because it's written in Word!

Communicative Activities

Quickwrite and ISpeakYouSpeak for Spanish 1: Los Pasatiempos: Here are several activities that give students the chance to practice writing and speaking in Spanish. Included are a warm up, a brainstorming activity, 2 quickwrite tasks (one on describing what one likes to do and what one has to do), and 2 ISpeakYouSpeak activities (that have the same themes as the quickwrite). A quickwrite activity encourages fluidity and movement in one's writing. It is like brainstorming, in some ways. Students take 3 minutes and write about a given topic without stopping. There's no time to look up words or check for grammar correctness. Instead, students just write. If they cannot think of what to say, they copy the last word they wrote until they think of a new idea.

ISpeakYouSpeak is a speaking activity where students speak for 30 seconds about a given topic in the target language. It is an activity that also encourages fluidity. This activity is written in Word, so you can tailor it to meet the needs of your students. Great for Spanish 1!

Interpersonal Writing: Una Predicción de mi Vida, Future Tense with -Ir: Here's an interpersonal writing task where students write to their future selves and predict what their lives will be like. Students will write about:

  • Their future personalities

  • Their future families

  • Their future school life ( classes, grades, activities, friends, etc.)

  • Their future hobbies (sports, activities at home, your talents)

  • Their future graduation day

  • Where they'll attend college (where they will be accepted, where they'll choose to go, what they'll study, etc).

Once the rough draft is finished, students will swap them with a partner's rough draft. They will peer edit each other's work. Then, they will complete a final draft. There is a rubric you can use to edit their work as well. Everything's in Word, so you can edit as necessary. Great for Spanish 1 or 2!

Other Activities

Presentational Speaking: Adivinar El Futuro Future WIth -ir: Here's an activity that encourages students to practice the future with -ir. It's a Presentational Speaking Activity where students get into pairs. One student is the fortune-teller, and the other asks about his/her future. There are 5 cards from which the students can pick. Once the student has chosen his or her card for the future, the pair writes a presentational dialogue. There is also a short warm up. Everthing's written in Word, so you edit as necessary. Great for Spanish 1 or 2!

Jigsaw Tasks for Jai-Alai: Interpretive Listening, Reading and Prezi: Here's a jigsaw task where students learn about the Spanish sport Jai-Alai. There is a basic warm-up. After, students go into one of three groups. One group answers questions based on a short reading on the sport, another answers questions based on a prezi on the sport and a third watches a video and answers questions on the sport. Each group has a different challenge level (you don't have to tell the students that, however). The reading is the least challenging, the prezi is a little more difficult, and the listening task is authentic and the most difficult. The site of the prezi is https://prezi.com/1jafxnl-e4is/jai-alai-en-espana/. The site of the video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsJcE8vjVQc. When all the groups finish, the groups split up, and students from different groups form new groups. There should be at least one representative of each of the first groups (one representative from the reading task, one from the prezi task and one from the listening task). They will share what they learned with the others. Of course, this means that all students will get all of the worksheets so that they can record their answers.

Because the reading text is not mine, I cannot charge for it. So you will need to add it to the document after you download it. You can get it for free from my website: https://gramatichica.wixsite.com/laprofesoragil/los-pasatiempos. Just scroll down to the Other Activities. You should be able to find the activity and the reading image that goes with it.

It's all written in Word, so you can edit as necessary. Great for a multilevel Spanish 1 or 2 class!

Projects

Group Project: Make a Board Game Future Tense with -Ir in Spanish Here is a project where students create a board game using the future tense with the verb -ir. Can be used during a travel theme unit or a pasatiempos unit. Students will work with a partner or a small group to create a board game based the use of the future ir. Students may choose one of the following types:

  • Adventure game

  • Role-play game

  • Strategy game

  • Action game

Once the games are complete, students will then share their games with the other groups. Each group will rate each game in terms of

  • the objective of the game,

  • the ease and playability of the game,

  • the enjoyability of the game,

  • the speed of the game,

  • the educational quality of the game

In my experience, students really enjoyed this project. The games they designed were intricate and fun. Of course, everything's written in Word, so you can edit as necessary (and change the theme but keep the main characteristics of the projects). Great for Spanish 1 or 2!

Proyecto: Mi Pasatiempo Favorito: Here is a basic project for a unit on Pasatiempos. Students will learn about their favorite pasttimes. Students will complete the following items in the project:

· What are five things their would need to do to make this hobby or sport your profession? (here, they'll use the tú commands -regulars and irregulars)

· What is a day in the life of a person who practices this hobby or sport as a profession? Students will use the present progressive to write a timeline of a day in the life of a professional in your sport or hobby.

· Who is a famous professional in their favorite sport? Students will describe the famous person, give a name, describe the person (physical characteristics and/or personality) and the person's success in the hobby.
